Founded in 2012, Snowflake is the only data warehouse built for the cloud. Snowflake's mission is to enable every organisation to be data-driven with instant elasticity, secure data sharing and per-second pricing, across multiple clouds. Snowflake combines the power of data warehousing, the flexibility of big data platforms and the elasticity of the cloud at a fraction of the cost of traditional solutions. Snowflake works with leading data management, data integration and BI partners, so you can bring easily together all your data and enable all your users to perform cutting edge analytics
Conventional data warehouses weren't designed to keep up with the exploding demand for data-driven insight. They are complex, costly and inflexible systems that have become obstacles rather than solutions to accessing and analysing all your data. Alternative, "Big Data" platforms such as Hadoop are merely toolkits, not complete solutions, that require massive resources to build and maintain. They're even more complex, require specialized skills, and simply weren't designed for data warehousing.
Snowflake built a completely new SQL data warehouse, which was guided by these principles:
- Break free from the past: Snowflake designed and implemented a new, unique architecture to stay clear from the limitations of existing architecture and software offerings.
- Design for the cloud: On-premise solutions are too complex, too expensive and getting more so each day. Snowflake was developed as a service from the ground up for the cloud, capitalising on the leading architecture and technology of the public cloud.
- Support modern data and applications: People want to focus on deriving insight from data - not configuring, tuning, and managing a data warehouse. Rather than just deliver traditional software hosted in the cloud, Snowflakes delivers data warehousing as a service.
- Diverse Data: Snowflake can support all of your business data, whether from traditional sources or newer machine-generated sources, without requiring cumbersome transformations and tradeoffs. Snowflake's patented technology natively loads and optimizes both structured and semi-structured data such as JSON, Avro, or XML and makes it available via SQL without sacrificing performance or flexibility.
